How Much Should Freelance Work Cost?

When considering whether to outsource a project, one of the questions many managers find themselves asking is: Does quality differ with rate? Much like choosing a fine wine, cost does not always correlate with quality. Instead, consider these factors:

1. Is the skill you are looking for highly specialized? How much experience does the provider have? If you’re looking for providers with hard-to-find skills or an extensive portfolio, you’ll likely be paying more. Hot skills, such as Ruby on Rails may command a higher rate.

2. What is the average market rate for this skill? Type in the skills you need into the search box of a marketplace such as oDesk” and browse through the provider profiles to take a look at what other providers are charging.

3. What is the length of your project? Providers may bid higher hourly rates for short-term projects. If you have longer-term needs, you may be able to negotiate.

4. Do you prefer working with freelancers or affiliate providers? Freelances charge roughly less on average due to reduced overhead and no office expenses. Affiliate firms, on the other hand, can easily help you scale up your team size if needed.

5. Is the person a full-time freelancer or a moonlighter? If you like to work with freelancers, remember that moonlighters may be willing to work for lower rates because it’s not a primary source of income.

Michelle Keller is the communications manager at oDesk, a unique company at the forefront of reinventing work. Every day, thousands of buyers and providers work together on oDesk.

Online Freelancing Work

More Freelance Work Exchange Relevant Information:
Online Freelancing Work

Many people have made a regular stream of income by freelancing, this basically means that people find work online and complete it to get paid. Once they have finished a project they move onto the next. The best thing about this is the fact you can earn as much or as little as you want depending on the time you have.

The safest way of doing this is to firstly start out freelancing in your spare time, make sure that you have a guaranteed flow of money coming in to pay the bills. You can then start to work freelance more and maybe go down to part time so you still have guaranteed money coming in every month. The problem with freelancing is that it’s never guaranteed, you have to work hard in finding the work and getting a name for yourself. After you have done that the work should come to you making it easier but people still have rough patches where people don’t need anything doing.

To make it easier there are a number of sites where people can list projects they need doing so you and all the other freelancers can bid on the project if you feel confident you can meet the user’s requirements. Be sure not to undercharge yourself, take the amount of time and effort that it will take into consideration and charge the client based on that. If you impress a client they will often give you regular work which is why it’s vital you put 100% into every project as you never know who’s looking at your portfolio.

These site often have a reputation meter where people will add comments after you have done their project, this means that the more you do the easier it will become to find new clients as people are often weary about taking new comers on in case they get scammed. It will be hard in the early stages as you will have no reputation or feedback from previous work, make sure you build a convincing portfolio so that people can see that you are a professional in your chosen field.

You can get daily/weekly/monthly reports of jobs that you may be interested in so you never miss out on a potential project. The more you sign up for, the more chance you have of finding work and begin in making serious money in the comfort of your own home.

Freelance Writing Jobs – Tips to Help Writers Handle Tough Clients

More Freelance Work Exchange News:
Freelance Writing Jobs – Tips to Help Writers Handle Tough Clients

As an online freelance writer, you’ll deal with clients from all walks of life. Some project will be perfect, and when that happens, you can hopefully turn that one project into a long-term relationship. However, no matter how well you write, you will sometimes run across clients who make your job extremely hard. Here’s a guide to handling the toughest kinds of clients out there:

THE WRITING JOB CLIENT WHO DOESN’T PAY

As a freelance writer, especially online, you need to protect yourself. There are tons of people who will try to get free work out of you, and online, it is easy to delete an email address and disappear. Before you start a project, make sure you exchange offline contact information (and verify it). You should also sign a contract to protect both of you. If the project is for a significant amount of money, it is also a good idea to arrange for pay in increments, especially when dealing with a client for the first time.

Of course, this doesn’t help you if you are already dealing with a client that hasn’t paid you. If this is the case, you can pursue the matter in court if you have a contract and contact information. Otherwise, you can use a web search service like www.copyscape.com to look for your work. If you find it online, you might be able to do a search at www.whois.com to find contact information. You can also contact the host provider to alert them that the work has been stolen, and they should respond by taking it down.

THE CLIENT WHO CHANGES HIS OR HER MIND

Nothing is more infuriating than throwing away your hard work because a client changes his or her mind half way through the project – or worse, after you’ve submitted first drafts. As a freelance writer, you should expect that your clients will want revisions from time to time. After all, no one is perfect. However, if you followed directions and provided a good copy the first time around, clients do not have the right to request major rewrites just because they changed their mind about something.

Be accommodating. If revisions will only take you a short amount of time, sometimes your best course of action is to do the revisions with a smile on your face, collect your payment, and decline future projects or more carefully discuss needs in the future. Your contract should always clearly define what revisions are free and what revisions must be bought.

If your client is asking for total rewrites, even though you did a good job on the originals, be wary. Sometimes, scammers use this technique to get double the amount of work from you, correctly suspecting that most writers never check the web for drafts they didn’t officially sell. You should also be wary of clients who cancel the project after you’ve already done most of the work. Be respectful, but always voice your concerns and ask for payment for the work you’ve done. You deserve it.

THE CLIENT WHO IS NEVER PLEASED

If you’re receiving negative feedback from all of your clients, you might want to reconsider the quality of your work or your readiness for the writing industry. However, if you mainly have happy clients, chances are that continuous negative feedback from one person isn’t a reflection of you. Some people are just really hard to please.

It can help if you have very clear expected standards. Here again, a contract comes in handy, but it might also help you if the client sends you an example of the work he or she is looking for from you. Sometimes, you just aren’t hitting the mark, and a simple change can clear that up, saving both you and the client time.

Keep in mind, though, that you can never please everyone. If you’re dealing with a client who doesn’t like your personal writing style or who gives you feedback in a condescending way, sometimes it is simply best if you go your separate ways amicably at the end of your current project.

No matter who your client may be, try to do the best job possible. Some people clash personalities or try to take advantage of one another, but remember that you can always turn down projects and look for new jobs.

To be successful, freelancers need a wide variety of clients sending them lots of writing projects. Legitimate Work at Home Jobs ? What are the Four Things You Need to Consider

More Freelance Work Exchange News:
Legitimate Work at Home Jobs ? What are the Four Things You Need to Consider

There are many successful legitimate work at home jobs, but the best of them share some common characteristics. You will want to know and understand that beginning a new business is a risky business, but there are ways to improve your chances of success. The key is planning and research of every aspect possible before making the transition to home based work. You should never leap into a new venture without doing the necessary research to ensure the most opportunity for success.  Take the time to consider the following factors before you decide whether owning your own business is right for you.

Develop a marketing plan

In order to make the most of legitimate work at home jobs, you should carefully prepare  before making any decisions about what type of work and indeed, whether this type of income gain is appropriate for you. Even if you ultimately decide not to work at home, you will need to develop a comprehensive business and marketing plan for your home business. Preparing for a home business should always begin with an idea that is expanded into a full-blown business plan. This will help you make each decision based on the planned expansion of your business.

Choose a product

Regardless of the type of legitimate work at home jobs that interest you, you should be familiar with the product or service that you are promoting. You are more likely to be successful if you are working with a product that you understand. If you are working to sell a product that you know nothing about, you won’t be able to understand how to reach the potential buyers of the product. So, choose a product that interests you and become an expert on the specific product. Others will recognize your knowledge base and come to you when they have need of the product that you are promoting.

Know your limits

While you may be excited about the opportunities available with legitimate work at home jobs, it is important to remember fiscal and physical limits that are likely to be pushed when you are working for yourself. Because you recognize the direct link between effort and income when you work for yourself, you may find yourself working longer hours in the hopes of earning more. This can work against you if you get too tired to make good decisions. While it’s great to enjoy what you do in your work life, take the time to have a life as well.

Take Action

Finally, if you have done all the research about legitimate work at home jobs and have picked a field that works with your current circumstances, what are you waiting for? You must take action in order to gain results. The best work at home opportunities don’t happen unless you take action to make them happen. Plan as carefully as you can and then act on your decisions. Even if the decision is to wait for a specific event or a certain level of resources to be reach, the importance is in the act of making the decision rather than just idling along your career path.

How to search for Freelance Writing Jobs on the Net

More Information About Freelance Work Exchange:
How to search for Freelance Writing Jobs on the Net

Many writers, and for that matter many others, don’t know how to search effectively on the Internet. Learning how to search to make money online will not only result in finding writing jobs that pay but improve your visits to the Internet overall.

The major search engines, Google, Ask, MSN, Yahoo, etc., ‘spider’ websites with bots (automated programs) that index every single word on the pages they can get to on the sites they visit. Your searches at a search engine are actually conducted on massive storage devices that have saved the index of words created by these bots. (That’s why clicking on a result at a search engine sometimes takes you to a page that doesn’t exist or doesn’t contain the query you submitted – that page has changed since the last time the search engine spidered and indexed it.) Understanding these indexes, however, lets us conduct clever searches on them for writing jobs – and anything else we need.

A single word search will produce different results than multiple word searches. For example, ‘writing’ (without the single quotes) produces over 605,000,000 results on Google. ‘Writing jobs’ (again without the single quotes) produces 63,000,000 results. That’s because the Boolean operator ‘AND’ (named after George Boole who developed the logic in 1854) is implied in cases where two words are used together. In this case, ‘AND’ means basically, “Show me all pages containing the words ‘writing’ AND ‘jobs.’ Any pages that don’t have both these words exclude from my results.”

In both the ‘writing’ and ‘writing jobs’ cases, the engine searched its indexes and found every instance of the words searched, no matter how or where they appeared on the indexed page. For ‘writing job,’ results are returned not only on pages where the words ‘writing’ and ‘jobs’ are used together, as you’d submitted them, but also on pages where ‘writing’ and ‘jobs’ were no where near and had nothing to do with each other.

But there’s a fix, look at this…a search using quotes, (double quotes this time), “writing jobs” produces 717,000 results, about 1/10th of the same search without quotes. Using double quotes tells the search engine to find only those pages where the words ‘writing and ‘jobs’ appear together in the order you listed them. “Jobs writing” produces even different results…62,300 to be exact.

Now, let’s make some money. Here are some real examples you can use. By adding words that make our search more exact, we can find writing jobs that pay and aren’t just for free, for donation or for the public domain. Put it all together in a Google search like this,

Freelance Writing Jobs-necessary Things to Know About Marketing Articles

As an article writer, success depends on your ability of marketing. To get your articles published and to attract more clients, you must have skill of marketing. When you lack knowledge about or afford less for marketing, your writings will be doomed to failure and so your career. Marketing is about advertising your articles and drawing more clients.

There are various ways of marketing; one of them is internet. Internet has been a vast field where you can market your writings and find more clients as well. On internet, you can use methods like direct mailing, web advertising or cooperative advertising.

Before knowing different ways of marketing, it is necessary to define your writing- topic about which you write or you are professional. When you define your work on advertisement, it becomes easier for others to find special writing, e.g. some looks for educational writings or others for professional writing like medical, business management. While defining your work, it is also mandatory to mention your name as it carries a big value for your writing that you are writing personally not for any company. It influences readers and encourages looking into your portfolio and topics provided by you.

If you have any website or blog where you keep your data of writings, it is better to mention it on advertisement, making sure that your website is active when client or readers visit it. That will help you to find out new clients or to increase your income. When you are using website for marketing, make sure to have space where readers can write comments on it because it will help you to know the interest of readers and correct mistakes if there is any. Do not forget to put link of your blog or website if you submit articles to other websites.

When you are writing for magazines or newspaper, it is always better to collect clips of different topics suitable for publishing. If your client is new, give copy of your clips with a note to remind them about you in future. If it is done by personal visit to publisher, it is more effective than emails.

Other method of advertisement is to tell friends or relatives about your freelancing writing articles. It is easy and free of charge without any commission.

It has become compulsory for a writer to be updated with different ways of marketing otherwise in this competitive world, you can fail to grow and show yourself as a good writer.

How to Easily Find Freelance Work

More Information About Freelance Work Exchange:
How to Easily Find Freelance Work

Have I gone mad? I don’t think so. The demand for experts to advice companies on ways to operate more efficiently has increased tremendously during this economy. The increase in costs above an employee’s salary has also made a contract/freelance position look much sweeter to the employer.  Combine these reasons and the increase in online freelance marketplaces and you have a recipe for opportunity, if you want to take it.

So where is all of the work out there?  Let’s look at the top three areas to find freelance work.

1. Staffing Companies

I like to list staffing companies first because this is an arrangement where they will work for you. Staffing companies look at thousands of positions and try to fill them with contract workers. They make their money by charging a bit more over your hourly rate. Link up with staffing companies that focus in your skill set (technology, management, manufacturing, etc.). Build a good relationship with these companies and you will have opportunities sent to you daily.

2. Online Marketplaces

There are projects sitting out there waiting for you. You just need to know where to find them. There are many freelance marketplaces that have thousands of opportunities for work. You can browse through available projects and bid on the ones that interest you. Lead time for these projects is short because all of the efficiencies of doing it online. Some very popular marketplaces are: eLance.com, Guru.com, oDesk.com, and ifreelance.com.

Don’t forget to also check out job boards on CareerBuilder.com, Monster.com, Hotjobs.com, and Dice.com for contract positions. In  addition to these sites there are many listings posted on Craigslist.org. For these sites it always helps to search locally first. Many customers posting here will probably want to meet face to face.

3. Use Your Connections

The easiest jobs you will get are through people that already know and trust you.  Take advantage of this by notifying your contacts about your freelance capabilities.  Let them know about the services you offer and ask them if they need any help.  In addition, start a blog and website to post helpful information and project examples.  This will prove your expertise and show you are knowledgeable in your industry.
