Medical Transcription

Medical transcription is a growth industry and the demand for qualified transcribers is high. With advances in technology, medical transcription is providing increasing opportunities for telecommuters and independent contractors.

'Flexibility' makes medical transcription a popular career option because it allows people to work from home. The freedom to work irregular hours from a home office is a draw card for those who are looking to balance career and lifestyle. According to occupational surveys, within this field there is a growing trend towards telecommuting and independent contracting . Medical transcription job opportunities can be found across the health sector from hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, government medical services and laboratories to medical libraries, universities, colleges and transcription services agencies. Medical transcription is also performed on-site, but with a properly equipped home office including: a computer with modem, a phone, fax, printer and dictating equipment with headset, you can enjoy the benefits of working from home in a rewarding job.

The main job function of medical transcribers is to listen to voice recordings of doctors and healthcare professionals and simultaneously transcribe them into medical reports, patient files and other related material. This process involves listening to the recordings on a special headset connected to dictating equipment and the information is then typed into a computer. Although, faster, more efficient technology like speech recognition technology is gaining in popularity. The Internet is being used more and more in medical transcription, both for receiving dictation and returning the finished medical documents.

So, how can you become a free agent in this field? As a rule, job providers require transcribers to have completed a training program offered by community colleges, vocational schools or you can do an accredited online or distance-learning course. Skills learnt on the job - in hospitals or other health facilities are also a valuable resource. Speed and accuracy are essential, as is a good grasp of English spelling and grammar. Finally, transcribers must have an understanding of medical jargon and procedures. Becoming a Certified Medical Transcriptionist through the AAMT is recommended.

The type of work done by freelance and telecommuting medical transcribers includes:

  • medical reports
  • patient histories
  • discharge reports
  • consultation reports
  • autopsy reports
  • correspondence

If you have the skills, qualifications and experience - or the desire to acquire them - you can set yourself on the path to a rewarding career in a growth industry that also lets you work from home.

TESTIMONIALS

"I took a chance one day when I was flush and sent a few bucks to gain access to the Freelance Work Exchange Professional Edition. Since then, I've edited a sales letter, a follow-up letter, an 11-page Web site, and a brochure. I'm 'on call' to do pinch-hit proofreading for a medical newsletter editor in Florida ..and I've landed a gig editing a new Canadian magazine coming out this fall. All this from taking a chance on Freelance Work Exchange."
